What Is Combed Cotton?

Combed cotton is cotton that has been processed through a combing stage before spinning. The combing process removes short fibres and aligns the remaining long fibres parallel to each other. The result is a smoother, stronger, more consistent yarn than carded cotton — which skips the combing stage entirely. Combed cotton is not the same as ring-spun cotton, though the two are often used together. Understanding the difference between all three — carded, combed, and ring-spun — tells you more about a garment's quality than most product pages will.

What is combed cotton?

After cotton is harvested and ginned, the raw fibres — called a sliver — contain fibres of varying lengths, as well as short fibre fragments, seed particles, and other impurities. Carding is the first processing stage: it disentangles and loosely aligns the fibres, removing the largest impurities. Combing is an additional stage that goes further — it removes the short fibres (called noils) and aligns the remaining long fibres precisely parallel to each other.

The combing stage removes approximately 15–25% of the raw fibre by weight. What remains is a higher proportion of long, uniform fibres. These long fibres produce a stronger, smoother, more consistent yarn when spun. Carded cotton skips the combing stage. The fibres are disentangled and loosely aligned by carding, but the short fibres remain in the sliver. When spun, the resulting yarn contains a mix of long and short fibres — which produces a slightly rougher surface, more protruding fibre ends, and a higher tendency to pill over time.

On a heavyweight cotton tee or sweatshirt worn against the skin, the difference between combed and carded cotton is tactile. Combed cotton feels smoother on contact. It pills less. Combing and ring-spinning are two different stages of yarn production. Combing happens before spinning — it prepares the fibre. Ring-spinning is the spinning method itself — it determines how the prepared fibre is twisted into yarn.

Ring-spinning continuously twists and draws the fibre into a fine, strong yarn. The alternative is open-end (rotor) spinning, which is faster and cheaper but produces a coarser, less consistent yarn. At 400gsm, the difference between combed and carded cotton is amplified. A heavier fabric has more yarn per square metre — which means more fibre ends per square metre. On carded cotton at 400gsm, those protruding fibre ends create a surface that pills more readily and feels slightly rougher on contact than the same weight in combed cotton.

A 400gsm garment in carded open-end spun cotton and a 400gsm garment in combed ring-spun cotton are both 400gsm. They are not the same garment.

What most brands get wrong about cotton specification

The first error is not disclosing the processing stage. "100% cotton" tells you nothing about whether the cotton is combed or carded, ring-spun or open-end spun. A brand that specifies "100% combed ring-spun cotton" is giving you the information you need to assess the yarn quality. A brand that says "100% cotton" is withholding it.

The second error is treating GSM as the primary quality indicator. Weight matters — but weight combined with yarn specification is what determines quality. A 400gsm carded open-end spun cotton garment will pill faster and feel rougher than a 320gsm combed ring-spun cotton garment.
