How to Tell If a Hoodie Is Good Quality

A good hoodie is identifiable before you read a single word of the product description. The fabric weight, the seam construction, the interior finish, and the way the garment holds its shape under tension are all legible if you know what to look for. Most people don't — because most brands don't explain it, and most product pages say nothing useful.
These are the eight tests we use. They work in-store, on delivery, and when assessing a garment you already own. They apply to any heavyweight cotton hoodie at any price point.

Test 1: Weight
Pick the hoodie up. A quality heavyweight hoodie should feel substantial in your hand before you put it on. If it feels light, it is light. GSM — grams per square metre — is the measure. Most high-street hoodies sit between 280gsm and 320gsm. A genuine heavyweight starts at 380gsm. At 400gsm, the difference is immediately apparent when you hold it.
Most brands don't disclose GSM. If the product page doesn't state it, assume it's under 320gsm. Brands that specify GSM are confident in their fabric weight. Brands that don't are usually hiding it.
The weight test is the fastest quality filter available. It takes two seconds and eliminates most of the market.
Test 2: Interior construction
Turn the hoodie inside out. What you see tells you more than the exterior ever will.
There are three interior constructions in descending order of quality: loop-back fleece (uncut loops, dense, structured), French terry (uncut loops, lighter density), and brushed fleece (mechanically broken loops raised into a pile). Loop-back fleece is the premium construction. Brushed fleece is the most common — it's soft on contact but degrades faster because the raised pile breaks down with washing.
A loop-back interior at 400gsm will feel slightly less immediately soft than brushed fleece, but it will feel the same in five years. A brushed fleece interior will feel noticeably thinner and flatter after 50 washes. According to the Textile Institute, intact loop structures retain their thermal properties significantly longer than mechanically broken pile constructions under repeated laundering conditions.
If the interior looks like a towel — dense, structured loops — that's loop-back fleece. If it looks like a soft fuzzy pile — that's brushed fleece. If it looks like the exterior with a slight texture — that's French terry or jersey. The construction is visible. You don't need to read the label.
Test 3: Seam quality
Run your finger along the shoulder seam, the side seam, and the seam where the sleeve meets the body. Quality seams are flat, consistent, and reinforced. What you're looking for:
- Stitch density — more stitches per centimetre means stronger seams. Loose stitching pulls apart under tension.
- Seam type — flatlock seams lie flat against the skin and are more durable than standard overlocked seams. Double-stitched seams are stronger than single-stitched.
- Consistency — the stitch line should be straight and even. Wavering or puckered seams indicate poor tension control during construction.
- Reinforcement at stress points — the underarm, the hood attachment, and the kangaroo pocket edges should be reinforced. These are the points that fail first on lower-quality garments.
Test 4: Ribbing at cuffs and hem
Stretch the cuff ribbing and release it. It should return to its original shape immediately and completely. Ribbing that stays stretched, bags out, or loses tension after a few wears is low-quality. The ribbing at the cuffs and hem is under constant tension — it's the first thing to fail on a poorly constructed hoodie.
Quality ribbing is dense, has a high elastane or cotton-elastane content, and is attached with a seam that doesn't pucker or pull. The width of the ribbing matters too — a narrow cuff band (under 5cm) will roll and distort. A wider band (7–9cm) holds its shape and sits cleanly against the wrist.
Test 5: The tension test
Hold the fabric between both hands and pull gently — not hard enough to damage it, but enough to put the knit under tension. Watch what happens when you release. Quality ring-spun cotton knit will return to its original state immediately. Lower-quality open-end spun cotton will show slight distortion or take longer to recover.
Do the same test on the seams. Pull the seam apart slightly and release. The stitching should hold without any visible gaping. If the seam opens under light tension, it will fail under normal wear.
This test also reveals the fabric construction. A dense loop-back fleece at 400gsm will feel resistant and structured under tension. A lighter brushed fleece will feel more pliable and less controlled.
Test 6: Pilling resistance
Rub the exterior surface of the fabric firmly with your thumb for 10–15 seconds. On a lower-quality garment, you'll see small fibre balls beginning to form — this is pilling, and it indicates that the surface fibres are loose and will continue to pill with wear and washing. On a quality ring-spun cotton that has been enzyme washed, the surface fibres have already been addressed in production — the enzyme wash removes the protruding fibres most likely to pill before the garment reaches you.
This test is more reliable on a garment you already own after a few washes. A hoodie that pills heavily after 5 washes will look worn out after 20. A properly finished heavyweight cotton hoodie should show minimal pilling after 50 washes.
Test 7: Colour depth and finish
Hold the garment up to natural light and look at the colour. Quality dyeing produces depth and consistency — the colour should look the same across all panels, with no variation at seams or edges. Cheaper dyeing processes produce flat, uniform colour that fades quickly and can look slightly artificial.
On a washed black or washed grey colourway, look for tonal variation — slight depth and variation in the colour that comes from the garment washing process. A flat, uniform black that looks the same across every panel has likely been dyed without a garment wash finish. A washed black with slight tonal depth has been through a finishing process that gives the colour character and makes it look better as it ages.
Test 8: What the label tells you
Read the composition label. 100% cotton is the baseline for heavyweight basics — no polyester, no elastane in the body fabric. Polyester blends are cheaper to produce and pill more readily. Elastane in the body fabric (not the ribbing) compromises the drape and the way the garment ages.
Look for: GSM stated anywhere on the label or swing tag. Ring-spun cotton specified. Country of manufacture — not a quality indicator on its own, but relevant context. OEKO-TEX certification — confirms the fabric has been tested for harmful substances. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is the relevant certification for garments worn against the skin.
What the label won't tell you: the yarn count (Ne), the loop construction type, or whether the garment has been enzyme washed. These are the details that separate premium from standard — and they're almost never disclosed on the label.
What price actually buys
The difference between a £40 hoodie and a £200 hoodie is not primarily the brand name. It's the fabric weight, the yarn quality, the construction method, and the finishing process. A £40 hoodie at 280gsm with open-end spun cotton and a brushed fleece interior will look worn out in 18 months. A £200 hoodie at 400gsm with ring-spun cotton, loop-back fleece, and enzyme washing will look better in 3 years than it did on day one.
The cost-per-wear calculation consistently favours the more expensive garment when the specification is correct. The eight tests above are how you verify that the specification is correct before you buy. A brand that can't answer questions about GSM, yarn type, and interior construction is a brand that doesn't want you to know the answers.
