What is preshrunk cotton?
Preshrunk cotton is cotton fabric or a finished garment that has been treated with heat, moisture, and agitation before it reaches you. The process forces the fibres to contract — to do what they would do in your first wash — before the garment is sold. What you receive is already dimensionally stable.
The alternative is untreated cotton: fibres still holding latent tension from the spinning and weaving process, waiting for the first encounter with hot water to release it. A garment that fits on the hanger may not fit after one wash. Most brands accept this. We don’t.
Why cotton shrinks
Cotton fibres are natural cellulose structures. During spinning, they are stretched under tension. During weaving or knitting, that tension is locked into the fabric construction. The fibres want to return to their natural, relaxed state — and heat and moisture give them the opportunity to do exactly that.
The Textile Institute classifies this as “relaxation shrinkage” — the release of mechanical stress introduced during manufacturing. It is not a defect. It is physics. The question is whether the manufacturer resolves it before sale or leaves it to the customer to discover.
Higher GSM fabrics — 400gsm versus 280gsm — carry more fibre mass and therefore more latent tension. The shrinkage potential is greater. Preshrinking at heavyweight is not optional if dimensional accuracy matters.
How preshrinking works
There are two primary methods. The first is Sanforization — a mechanical process developed in the 1930s where fabric is fed through a series of rollers under steam and compression. The fibres are forced to contract before the fabric is cut and sewn. Cotton Incorporated notes that Sanforized fabric typically retains less than 1% residual shrinkage after treatment.
The second method — and the one relevant to HQ 001 — is garment dyeing. When a finished garment is submerged in a heated dye drum and tumbled for several hours, it undergoes the same thermal and mechanical stress as a domestic wash cycle, repeated. By the time the garment is dried and finished, the shrinkage has already happened. The dye process and the preshrinking process are the same process.

Care after preshrinking
Preshrunk cotton is not immune to further shrinkage — it is resistant to it. Extreme heat can still cause movement. Cotton Incorporated research shows that even Sanforized cotton can shrink 1–3% when washed above 60°C or tumble dried on high heat repeatedly.
The care instruction is simple: cold wash, inside out, air dry. Not because the garment is fragile — 400gsm ring-spun cotton is not fragile — but because heat is the only remaining variable that can alter what the dye drum already resolved. Remove the variable.
