What is garment dyeing?
Garment dyeing is a finishing process where a fully constructed garment — sewn, assembled, and complete — is submerged in a dye bath after production. The dye penetrates the cotton fibres directly, rather than colouring the yarn or fabric before the garment is cut and sewn.
The result is a finish that no piece of pre-dyed fabric can replicate. Seams absorb dye differently to panels. Ribbing takes colour at a different rate to fleece. The garment develops tonal variation that is structural — built into the construction, not applied on top of it.
According to the Textile Institute, garment dyeing is classified as a post-assembly finishing process, distinct from piece dyeing (fabric dyed before cutting) and yarn dyeing (yarn dyed before weaving or knitting). Each produces a fundamentally different aesthetic and performance profile.
How the process works
The garment is loaded into a large rotating drum — similar in principle to an industrial washing machine — filled with water, dye, and fixatives. Temperature, rotation speed, and dwell time are controlled precisely. For heavyweight cotton at 400gsm, the process runs longer than for lighter fabrics: the dye needs time to penetrate the full depth of the loop-back construction.
After dyeing, the garment is enzyme-washed. Enzymes break down surface fibres, softening the hand feel and creating the slightly irregular, lived-in texture that characterises a well-executed garment-dyed piece. This is not a defect. It is the point.
The final step is tumble drying at controlled heat to pre-shrink the garment and set the dye. What comes out of that drum is the finished piece — dimensionally stable, colour-set, and already broken in.

Why 100% cotton matters
Garment dyeing works best on natural fibres. Cotton absorbs reactive dyes at a molecular level — the dye bonds with the cellulose structure of the fibre rather than sitting on the surface. Cotton Incorporated research confirms that 100% ring-spun cotton achieves significantly higher dye uptake than cotton-polyester blends, producing richer tonal depth and more durable colour retention over repeated washing.
Polyester resists reactive dye entirely. A 50/50 blend produces a flat, washed-out result — the cotton fibres take colour, the polyester fibres do not. The tonal variation that makes garment dyeing distinctive becomes muddy rather than intentional. We removed polyester from the HQ 001 construction for this reason, among others.
Ring-spun cotton at 400gsm also holds its structure through the dye process. Open-end spun yarns — cheaper, faster to produce — can pill and distort under the heat and agitation of the dye drum. The Textile Institute notes that ring-spun yarns demonstrate superior tensile strength and abrasion resistance, which matters when the garment is being tumbled in a commercial dye bath for several hours.
What it means for your garment
A garment-dyed piece arrives pre-shrunk. The dye process involves heat, agitation, and moisture — the same forces that cause shrinkage in the wash. By the time the garment reaches you, that dimensional change has already happened. What you receive is the finished size.
The tonal variation is not inconsistency. Seams, hems, and ribbing will be slightly darker or lighter than the main panels — this is structural, not a quality issue. It deepens with wear. The piece you own in two years will look more considered than the piece you received on day one.
