The fabric composition label is the most important thing on a hoodie. Most people never read it.

The core difference

Cotton is a natural cellulose fibre. It breathes, absorbs moisture, softens with wear, and ages with character. Polyester is a synthetic petroleum-derived fibre. It is lighter, dries faster, and holds its shape without treatment — but it does not improve over time.

These are not equivalent materials with different price points. They are different decisions about what a garment is for. A cotton hoodie is built to be worn, washed, and kept. A polyester hoodie is built to be produced cheaply and replaced.

The Textile Institute classifies them under entirely different fibre categories — natural cellulosic versus synthetic thermoplastic — with distinct performance profiles across moisture management, thermal regulation, and long-term wear behaviour.

Hand feel and weight

Ring-spun cotton at 400gsm has a density and drape that polyester cannot replicate at equivalent weight. The loop-back fleece construction — smooth face, looped interior — creates a surface that softens progressively with washing. The garment you own in a year feels better than the garment you received.

Polyester fleece is lighter for the same visual bulk. It achieves loft through fibre crimp rather than fabric mass. The hand feel is consistent — it does not change much with washing — but it also does not improve. What you receive is what you keep.

Breathability and temperature

Cotton fibres are hydrophilic — they absorb moisture and allow it to evaporate. This makes cotton naturally breathable and effective at temperature regulation. In cold weather, the fabric traps warmth. In mild weather, it does not overheat.

Polyester is hydrophobic — it repels moisture rather than absorbing it. This makes it fast-drying but poor at breathability. Sweat sits on the surface rather than being absorbed, which creates the odour retention problem that polyester hoodies are known for. The synthetic fibres also generate static, which attracts lint and dust over time.

Durability and ageing

Polyester resists shrinkage and holds its shape without preshrinking treatment. In the short term, this reads as durability. Over time, polyester pills — the fibre ends break and tangle on the surface — and the pilling cannot be reversed. The garment degrades visibly.

High-GSM ring-spun cotton, properly constructed and cared for, does not pill in the same way. The tightly twisted ring-spun yarns resist fibre breakage. The weight of the fabric — 400gsm versus a typical 280gsm polyester hoodie — means there is more material to wear through before the garment shows age. Why blends fall short

The 80/20 cotton-polyester blend is the most common compromise in the hoodie market. It is positioned as getting the best of both fibres. In practice, it delivers the limitations of both. The polyester content reduces breathability and introduces pilling. The cotton content is insufficient to deliver the hand feel or weight of a 100% cotton construction.

Blends also dye unevenly in garment dyeing — the cotton fibres absorb reactive dye, the polyester fibres do not. The result is a flat, inconsistent finish rather than the tonal depth that 100% cotton produces. We removed polyester from HQ 001 for this reason specifically.

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation has also noted that blended fabrics are significantly harder to recycle than single-fibre garments — the fibres cannot be easily separated at end of life. A 100% cotton garment is biodegradable. A 50/50 blend is not.
